My Interest in fashion began before I can remember. My great grandmother, my Nona and my Mum all helped to nurture my interest in art and design through their own skills in sewing, painting and embroidery. I began sewing at the age of 10 and formally began studying design at the age of 18 at the Fashion Design Studio. It was through my study where I also began to learn tailoring and couture techniques that helped my simple design style flourish and develop into something more informed and coherent.
My work is a reflection of all my interests; specifically that of artists work Including Leonor Fini and Frances bacon. The key idea behind all my work is to embrace both the classic feminine aesthetic and to represent a new-age feminine ideal. My graduate collection is a combination of modernity and a rebellion against traditional femininity.
In my first year of my Design Degree I began an internship at the Australian label Zimmermann. It was through my internship where I gauged a specific interest in exceptional garment finishes and the importance of the perfect fit and cut of garments. After several months of interning I was offered a job as a general design room assistant whilst I completed my studies, and then eventually becoming a design assistant for the ready to wear design team.
During my time as a student, I was involved in several competitions and collaborations that helped to develop my confidence as a young designer and illustrator. In my first year of study I was a winner in the World square fashion illustration competition, where I submitted a sketch detailing the perfect spring look. After this competition my illustration was featured in Sydney’s ‘Time Out’ magazine.
During my final year of study I collaborated with Vogue Australia and Witchery to create a piece for a photo shoot for the ovarian cancer foundation’s ‘white shirt campaign’. My original design was featured in vogue magazine online and in print, and the shirt was auctioned off, with all proceeds going to the foundation.
Over the past six months upon the completion of my graduate collection, I have worked with several talented stylists, involving myself and my work in several fashion editorials. Recently pieces from my graduate collection appeared in London-based ‘Schön magazine’.
